M&S Jaquard Graphic Abstract Duvet Cover

GreyduvetDependable Marks and Spencer might not be a hotbed of retro design but from time to time it does come up with something worth a mention, such as this Jacquard Graphic Abstract Duvet Cover.

The online production description refers to it as contemporary, but I would beg to differ as its pattern is a very retro op-art design in a subtle blue-grey colour. It is available in a range of sizes, costing from £29.50 for the single duvet cover and going up to £59 for the super king size.

Visit Marks and Spencer’s website to buy online.

Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair

Relaxer_millerstripeRocking chairs are often pigeon-holed as being for either the elderly or for children, perhaps appealing to those age groups because they are comfortable or fun. But there is no reason why the rest of us shouldn’t enjoy a rocking chair too, especially when we can add ‘stylish’ to its list of attributes as is the case with Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair.

Originally designed in 1974, they were only available in limited numbers back then so became something of a collectors’ item. But seeing its potential popularity, Matzform re-released the Relaxer in 2004. Its available to buy from several retailers, including DDR, where prices start at 1090 Euros (approximately £820) for plain fabric upholstery with prices rising for the striped option pictured here or leather coverings.

Thanks to Martin Kuijpers for the tip off about this chair.

Dittos Classic Flare Jeans

Ditto Such is the cyclical nature of fashion that flared jeans are now making a huge comeback (they never really went away in my house, but that’s another matter). Most high street shops are doing reasonable versions, but if you want something more authentically 1970s, what you need is a pair of Dittos Classic Flare Jeans.

Dittos were the original premium jean brand in the 1970s, hugely desirable back then and re-launched last year. As well as a fabulous cut, Ditto jeans are available in an amazing palette of colours. ASOS have Dittos in Cherry Red (pictured here) and the wonderfully named Envy Green, priced at £175 a pair.

However, It may be better to buy them from the USA though, for example ShopBop is selling them for $159 (approximately £80) and whilst they don’t have the red option, they do stock various shade of blue that may be more forgiving on those with less than model proportions.

Brief Encounter on stage at Cineworld Haymarket

BriefencounterThe classic 1946 film, Brief Encounter premiered at the cinema on the Haymarket in London and now it is making a return to that same venue, but as a stage play.

This production will switch between theatre and film, combining Noel Coward’s original stage play Still Life and the screenplay of Brief Encounter. The story involves the lives and loves of three couples played out in a station tearoom.

As well as the chance to see this classic tale on stage, this is also an opportunity to see the Haymarket venue being used as theatre. When the venue opened in 1927 it was suitable for both film and theatre shows, but gradually film began to dominate its repertoire and it became a three screen cinema in 1979.

The show previews from 2 February until 22 June and tickets are being offered at a discounted rate for the first month. For further information visit the website www.seebriefencounter.com

Pierre Paulin’s Orange Slice Chair

Orangeslice

Much like the word vintage, iconic is a word that is over-used, but the Orange Slice Chair by Pierre Paulin is surely one piece of furniture worthy of that honour.

Designed in 1960, it is one of Paulin’s series of chairs for Artifort that combine an inner structure of steel tubing with foam and fabric to create a structural piece. It is still being manufactured today by Artifort and it can be bought online from several place, including from Modern Classics Direct where they cost £399.

They are available in a wide selection of colours, although ironically it seems, not orange!

Visit Modern Classic Direct to view their selection.

Aaron Foster Bob Dylan Portrait

AarondylanArtist Aaron Foster specialises in found art, that is reusing old things in a new context. His chosen medium is discarded license plates, which he uses to create some amazing pieces of art.

He started off by producing a map of the USA using license plates, but has expanded his range to include images of cars (a fairly natural association) and more surprisingly portraits of rock stars. Pictured here is his Bob Dylan portrait, which if you look at closely, you can see is made up of license plates.

Each one of his pieces is handmade in California and can be bought online from American in XS. The Dylan portrait costs $1,300 (approximately £650)
