Retro Retreat: Art deco-style St Moritz hotel in Cornwall

Moritz

With all the fuss over the Midland Hotel, it’s easy to forget that there are other stylish retreats in the UK – like St Moritz hotel in Cornwall.

This art deco-styled hotel was originally a luxurious private house, but after the war it became a luxury hotel noted for its high-end food. he latest re-incarnation offers much the same, but beneath that deco-esque facade is a more modern holiday experience, with modern rooms packing flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, hair straighteners and plenty of other luxuries.

There’s also a choice of hotel room or apartment, a leisure club, spa and p,enty of great scenery all around. Prices start at £95 out of season for a room.

Vagga cradle offers mid-century comfort for your new-born

Vagga

A modern piece with classic looks – the Vagga cradle by Jonas Lindvall.

Lindvall has gone back to the classic Scandinavian designs of the mid-century era for inspiration, offering  a hand-crafted rocking cradle in sold walnut, using the grain of the wood to create a ‘marbled’ finish on the exterior.

Apparently that requires much hand planing and bonding of over 120 walnut slats. And those man hours don’t come cheap – the Vagga retails for £1,950.

Metrofarm’s retro-styled DJ desks

Metro1

I love vinyl. Indeed, I have my own decks set up sat home. But my set-up doesn’t look anywhere near as stylish as these Metrofarm DJ desks.

Functionality meets high-end design, as the Berlin-based studio packs in a couple of decks and mixer, whilst offering a stylish finish for a club, bar or (if you have the cash), your living room.

I’m more than taken with the wood finish above, but check out the orange wall-based unit over the page too for a 70s vibe. No news of pricing, but I’m pretty certain you’ll be talking serious cash for one of these custom-built objects.

B&B Italia’s 1970s Diesis sofa

Diesis

It looks contemporary, but the Diesis sofa from B&B Italia actually dates back to the 1970s.

1979 was the actual year it went into production, the work of Antonio Citterio & Paolo Nava and featuring a tubular steel frame with die cast aluminium accents, along with shaped polyurethane cushions covered in leather and fabric for comfort.

Almost 30 years old, but as cutting edge as anything you’ll find on the market. Prices start at around £4,400.

Allotment Shop retro Jute Shopping Bag

Allotment
We all seem to be growing our own fruit and vegetables these days. If you don’t believe me, give you local council a call and ask about the waiting list for an allotment – you’ll be talking years rather than months. But that’s good news for retailers of gardening goods – like the Allotment Shop.

The Allotment Shop specialises in retro/vintage gardening gear – everything from tools to garden accessories and bird feeders. And they also have this rather cool Allotment Shop Jute Shopping Bag.

Handmade in the UK, it features a ‘cheeky’ vintage image and slogan, gingham heart detail, long handles and a large capacity for carrying your shopping. Cheap too – just £3.
