Niagara brings pop art with an edge to the Outre Gallery

Niagara

The Outre Gallery in Melbourne/Sydney can always be relied upon for interesting retro-styled artwork – and that certainly applies to Niagara, who is returning to the gallery for her From Detroit With Love exhibition.

It’s pop art with an edge from the the artist (and one-time member of art rockers Destroy All Monsters) – think tough women, guns and witty captions pr a darker Roy Lichtenstein if you like.

Alongside original works (including the two above), there will also be limited edition prints to buy – two of which can be pre-ordered now, with another five available at the time of the exhibition. Signed limited edition prints retail for $125 (around £70), which seems like a good investment to us.

The show runs from the 16th February in Melbourne and 23rd February in Sydney. And for the rest of the world, prints can be shipped anywhere.

Find one of 50 Paddington Bears in UK train stations this week

Paddington_bond
He might not look it, but Paddington Bear is 50 years old this week. And to celebrate, BBC Radio 4 is placing 50 Paddington Bears (like the one in this picture with creator Michael Bond) in prominent places in train stations around the UK wearing the label ‘Please Look After this Bear’. The bears will be in place and ready to be found from 9.30am on Tuesday 22nd January (which is tomorrow)

In exchange for taking the Paddington Bears home, the finders will be asked to call Radio 4 and leave a special birthday message about the bear. Which seems like a small price to pay.

And if you’re a fan, Radio 4 will have a special one-off programme on Saturday March 1st at 10:30am featuring the people who found the bears, as well as Michael Bond talking about his character and the first-ever owner of a Paddington – who happens to be Jeremy Clarkson (whose mother originally made the bears).

Anya Hindmarch Concorde washbags

Anya_bag

Apparently, if you fly first class with British Airways, you get one of these Anya Hindmarch Concorde washbags for free. But for us mere mortals, you can also buy them online from BA.

Created exclusively for BA by Anya Hindmarch, each of the bags features a vintage image of Concorde and is made of nylon and canvas, with a full lining and chrome zip.

And best of all, both are now massively discounted. The small washbag was selling for £55, but is now down to £19.80, with the larger bag previously at £65, now also selling for £19.80.

London Street Sign coffee table

London_table

Clever design and eco-friendly too – the London Street Sign coffee table.

Yes, these are authentic City of Westminster street name signs, the work of Sir Misha Black and originally used from the 60s and 70s. Obviously these have been replaced over time, with Cockney Design picking up the old ones and recycling into these coffee tables.

You can choose your a specific sign from a wide selection on the site, available ‘as is’ with all original scuffs or restored to their original glory with a new finish. Each one is then fixed to steel legs, which are finished in a polyester powder coating.

The total size is 19 x 18 x 32 inches, with each table retailing for £159.

Freddy & Ma US Election retro-style tote bags

Freddy
The more shrewd of you will have noticed that we’re based in the UK, so don’t get to vote in the US elections. But that doesn’t stop us appreciating these rather cool Freddy & Ma US Election retro-style tote bags.

The idea is to ditch the car sticker and carry something useful, stylish and eco-friendly. The psychedelic lettering and imagery is certainly a strong selling point, as well as the fact that these are made of organic cotton (free of toxic chemicals) and can cut down our plastic bag consumption.

Plenty of candidates and political persuasions to choose from, all retailing for a very affordable $25 (around £13).
