Telstar The Movie heads to DVD

Telstar

It could have gone either way, but Telstar, the story of maverick early 60s producer Joe Meek, was actually really well received when it hit the cinemas. So the DVD of Telstar should be fairly popular.

As you might expect, it covers the rapid rise to fame, his unique brand of 60s pop,  early 60s London, madness, depression, bizarre studio equipment, heartbreak, paranoia, murder and suicide, not to mention drugs and the occult.

The DVD release also throws in a documentary (Telstar: An Inside Look), additional scenes, extended performance clips and the trailer. Amazon is doing pre-orders right now for under £10, the release date is September 28th 2009.

For sale: 1940s RM Schindler-designed Rodriguez House in Glendale, California

Rod1

A very cool house with a great pedigree and a pile of period features – the Rodriguez House in Glendale, California could be yours, but only if you have a serious stash of cash put away.

Designed by Rudolph Schindler, a former colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright for writer/composer Jose Rodriguez in 1941, this is a stunning modernist meets mid-century property that was built with a bigger budget than Schindler was used to, which means premium finishes including Santa Maria stone, green-flecked slate, clear Douglas fir, cypress, zinc and copper repoussée panels, built-in furniture, and extensive walls of glass. Lots of period features still survive too, including the original shape/design, distinctive windows and two modernist fireplaces.

1970s Adidas Jeans trainers reissued

Adidas_jeans

Big thanks to @daysofspeed for spotting the low-key arrival of the Adidas Jeans trainers at the Adidas online store.

First introduced in the late 70s and a popular wear on the terraces into the 80s, the Adidas Jeans (as you might imagine) was designed to be worn with jeans, pretty much as this reissue is. The 2009 take is a reproduction of the 70s original in a blue and off-green colourway, keeping that trademark dash of yellow on the sole and of course, the all-suede upper.

Yours for £75 while stocks last.

Leica M9 retro-styled digital rangefinder camera

Leicam9

The classic M8 made it into our recent best 60s-style cameras feature at Modculture, so you just know we would be excited about the arrival of the Leica M9, the company's first full frame digital rangefinder camera.

The looks alone are a head-turner, but if you take our photography seriously, you'll like what you hear about the inner workings too. Those include an 18-megapixel, full-frame 24 x 36mm sensor, compatibility with Leica's M lenses, ISO from 80 to 2500 and shutter speeds of up to 1/4000 of a second (with barely a noise when in use). Build quality isn't bad either – a one-piece, full metal housing, solid brass top and bottom plates and room for a 2.5-inch monitor on the rear.

It's a dream, but here's the nightmare – it retails for  hefty £4,850 in either the contrast or all-black colourway.

Archivio Storico 1930s Naska 1 desk lamp

Arch_table

The Anglepoise 1227 wasn't the only stylish desk lamp designed in the early 1930s – check out the Archivio Storico Naska 1 lamp, newly-reissued by Fontana Arte.

Designed back in 1933 (a year ahead of the Anglepoise), the Naska 1 is an Italian modernist gem, with a revolving bracket for shifting light in all directions, a base and stem made of steel and a finish in either black, white or aluminium for the head.

The Naska 1 is the biggest og the family, sized around 50 x 50cm and selling for £212. The Nasketta is around 30 x 30cm, that sells for £152.
