80s-style Tape cushion

Pump

Straight out of France is this rather cool Tape cushion from Bonjour Mon Coussin.

Perfect for brightening up a dull sofa, the chair has a distinctly 80s design in both font and content – especially the old tape in the centre.

It's sized at 50 x 50cm, with a front of polyester and a back of polycotton and can be yours for 39 Euros (cover only) or 44 Euros (cushion and cover).

Mini United Festival – music meets iconic car

Mini50

If you love the Mini and like a bit of music, you might want to get yourself booked into this year's Mini United event, which celebrates the Mini's 50th anniversary.

It takes place at Silverstone from 22nd to 24th May, offering everything the MIni fan could want, including the chance to drive Silverstone in your own Mini (or as a passenger in the MIni Challenge race), classic MIni racing, plenty of exhibitions, stunt shows, go-kart racing, driver training and if you like, a tour of the Mini factory at nearby Oxford. Loads of other Minis old and new too, which goes without saying.

Oh yes – music too, with Paul Weller headlining a line-up that also includes Calvin Harris and Twisted Wheel (the latter joining Weller on-stage to spin through a classic), along with plenty of other activities and a camping area that can take up to 10,000 tents. Tickets just £35 in advance for the weekend, under-14s go free.

Retro-styled seedbox range from Original Metal Box Company

Seedbox

If you love your gardening and fancy brightening up the shed, the retro-styled seedbox range from Original Metal Box Company could be for you.

It's designed for holding packets of seeds within the six internal compartments, but there's no reason why you couldn't use it for other things, indoors or out. The box itself is made of mild steel, sized at around 30 x 30cm and with that bold print on the front, inspired by vintage public information posters.

You can pick them up for £80.

Knoll MR chaise longue by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Knoll

Back in the depths of 2008, we featured the MR armchair, a modernist classic from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. But if you want something a little more laid back, you might want to check out the equally stylish Knoll MR chaise longue.

It's very much a companion piece to the 1920 classic, oozing cool from its tubular polished chrome frame and floating curves – indeed, as the seat itself cantilevers over the base, it's also an incredibly minimalist design. And if you're worried about comfort, the seat has plenty to offer from those individual quilted and seamed cushion sections.

Each one has the signature of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe stamped into the base of the chair, along with an individual production number, with a choice of black or white for colours. No matter which you choose, it retails for just over £4,000.

Knu Red Ball Rocker – mid-century style rocking horse

Ballrocker

One thing you're guaranteed from a rocking horse is that it's usually got the look of a horse about it. Unless you opt for the Red Ball Rocker.

It's a mid-century (specifically 1960s) take on the rocking chair, offering something that looks like your very own piece of modern art, which is perhaps another reason to buy it if you don't have small kids. Eco-friendly too, with all the timber used from sustainable sources.

We haven't found a UK seller as yet, but if you're in the US (or want to get one shipped over), the price is $225.

Art deco-styled Midland Hotel in Morecambe – now under new management

Midland_1
We’re big fans of the art deco-styled Midland Hotel in Morecambe, but as our review said, we didn’t think the service (the restaurant in particular) was any match for the stylish surroundings. That could be about to change.

Owners Urban Splash has partnered up with high-end hotel group English Lakes Hotels, maintaining its ownership, but giving over the management and marketing of the hotel to English Lakes. That hopefully means someone answering emails, a restaurant on a par with the surroundings and a hitch-free online booking service. Essentially, dealing with all the things that have let it down so far in our eyes (we’re presuming they can’t do anything about Morecambe itself).

Saying that, the hotel is still worth a visit, especially if you love art deco architecture, retro-styled interiors and bracing seafront walks. You can check out our full review here or visit the Midland website below.
