Treehouse fabric by Alice Stevenson

Treehouse

Though this Treehouse fabric is a contemporary design by Alice Stevenson, its skeletal pattern looks like it came straight out of the 1950s and the sketch book from someone like Lucienne Day. The design is from the St Judes stable and is made of two colours – the grey on grey option is shown but it's also available in faded red on grey – printed onto 250 gsm linen, perfect for making up curtains or loose covers.

The fabric costs £44 but if you are feeling a bit lazier St Judes sell ready-made cushion covers in this design.

Printing press stamps

Printing press letters

If you were a fan of the Kent and London alphabet drawers you may also like these printing press stamps which use the same idea although on a much smaller scale. Each stamp features a letter, number or symbol inspired by old printing press blocks. They are designed to be decorative and would be an attractive alternative to the ready-made vintage looking signs that you can buy for the home.

The size of each block varies, starting at 7cm high, and each block costs £3.50.

Eero Aarnio space age Piccolo Table

Piccolo

A design that was produced to accompany a 1960s classic, but only appeared around 40 years later – the Eero Aarnio Piccolo Table.

It was designed to go with the 1966 Cognac armchair (which we featured last week), appearing in 2008, but with the same late 60s looks as that original seat. Available in glossy black or white, the table is made of fibreglass with two levels and standing at a height of around 60cm, with a diameter of around 55cm..

There's only one drawback – the price. To get one, you'll need to shell out 1,690 Euros.

The Pattern Sourcebook: A Century of Surface Design

Pattern sourcebook

Of the huge amount of pattern design books being published at the moment, The Pattern Sourcebook: A Century of Surface Design stands out from the crowd. It's partly because of its size: 350 illustrations are crammed into 304 pages. But it's also because of its approach. The author, Drusilla Cole, has selected patterns from the last hundred years, from fabrics, wallpapers, ceramics and other mediums which are ordered within the book by aesthetic, rather than chronological, reasons. This means contemporary creations sit next to retro designs and it's a lesson in inspiration, not history.

Artistic legends such as Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi sit alongside Retro To Go favourites like Marimekko, Angie Lewin and Mark Hearld of the St Judes Gallery, whose work is used on the cover. Something to dip into time and time again, amazingly the book only costs £13.97 on Amazon.
