Ikea Skruvsta retro-styled swivel chair

Ikea_skruvsta
A mix of the old and the new with this latest seating from Ikea – the Skruvsta retro-styled swivel chair.

In some ways, it’s a very modern piece – a height-adjustable chair with a steel and plastic base that would be ideal as an occasional office chair. But the actual seat has a 60s-style shape and a 100 per cent cotton fabric covering that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the 70s.

And best of all, with it being an Ikea piece, it’s cheap. You can pick this up at your local store for just £69.90. Or you can have it delivered now that Ikea offers online shopping.

Toasty – retro toaster like a cassette deck

Toasty

Toasters are pretty standard in design – a set number of slots in the top, a catch to push down and a pop-up when it’s ready. But all that could change with Toasty.

Toasty is a new way of toasting your bread products, mixing 80s technology with 50s styling. Open it up like a cassette deck, pop in your bread and close. When it’s ready, the door pops open and your ready to butter. If only it printed a cassette pattern on the bread, this would be pretty much perfect.

It might yet happen, because this is a concept courtesy of designer Arthur Wu, not quite ready to go into production. When it does, we’ll be at the front of the queue.

Looking for an authentic 1960s rug? You might want to take a look at the Emilio Pucci Giardino rug.

It uses a print first seen in 1968, an era which saw Pucci rugs described as "floor paintings in wool" and sold in limited editions – if you wanted an original now, you would have to try your luck in one of the leading auction houses.

This reissue is also limited – in this case, just 15 pieces – each handmade and made in France from 100 per cent wool and in nine colours. Price is dictated by size, but starts at £4,200.

Stelton Ship´s Lamp

Ships_lamp
Ships might not need lamps anymore, but that doesn’t mean the concept can’t be updated for the modern home, as is the case with this Stelton Ship´s Lamp.

Designed by Erik Magnussen, it updates the old-style lamp by recreating it in polished stainless steel and using a cylinder design to keep the wind out – which keep the flame in. Ideal for use outdoors, it uses kerosene or lamp oil to keep the fire burning, with a hanger at the top or a flat bottom for a choice of location.

Available in a choice of sizes, it retails online from 317 Euros.

Vitra Ball Clock by George Nelson

Vitra_ball
It isn’t the first time we’ve featured a George Nelson-designed clock, but we love them so much, we make no apologies for throwing in another – in this case, the Vitra Ball Clock.

Amazingly, Nelson designed this in 1948 and it’s still in production by Vitra today, in a choice of bright colours. It’s made of lacquered wood and metal, with a high-grade quartz clockwork, all powered by a single battery (included) and featuring the Vitra badge (in case no-one believes it’s authentic.

You can pick one up online for around £160.
