Yellow Submarine bathtime radio

Yellow_submarine_1 OK, this isn’t a replica of The Beatles’ cartoon sub, but this Yellow Submarine bathtime radio should liven up bath nights a little more than any kind of rubber duck – even the James Brown one.

Essentially it’s a musical bath toy, floating in your bath, but also hiding an FM radio and waterproof speakers. The radio features auto-scan to find your favourite stations easily, along with a power switch, volume control and a hidden antenna. And runs off 2x AA batteries.

Available now, you can pick one up for £14.95. Oh yes, it’s also available in black – but there isn’t a song called Black Submarine, so we conveniently overlooked that fact.

Lava Lamp Night Light

Lava_nightlight If you feel the need for some light during the night, you might as well get one that’s interesting – like this Lava Lamp Night Light.

It works in just the same way as the original 60s version (hot wax rising through the oil), but all in miniature, just plugging into your socket. There’s a choice of two coloured waxes (red or yellow) and the whole things costs just $9.99 (around £6).

Note that this is a US product – if you’re buying on another country, probably best to check if it works there before purchasing.

Lomography Fisheye camera – circular photography

Lomography_fisheye

We’ve covered Lomography previously, in particular the Oktomat camera. But we’re now really into the Lomography Fisheye camera.

Just looking at it, you can see why. The black and white version offers some great vintage/pop art look styling. But it’s not all about looks. The "fisheye" aspect is all about the lens, capturing a 170-degree view on standard 35mm film and compacting it into a circular image – not unlike the introduction to The Sweeney or many classic 60s album covers.

And the cameras aren’t expensive either – you can pick one up for just £26.86, with value bundles also on offer for film and a circle cutter.

Hannspree Hannslounge – 70s-style retro TV

Hannspress_lounge If the Predicta Meteor space age TV was a little too quirky, you could try a different kind of retro TV – the Hannspree Hannslounge.

We’ve covered the unusual designs of Hannspree previously, but now the company has a new Style range of sets available in the UK, the pick of which is the 70s-inspired Hannslounge. Just like your parent’s set, this has a smart wood surround (side and back) – in this case, walnut. Add to that some leather, polished alloy and a deer-horn shaped stand and you’ve got something stylish that should sit nicely within your 60s/70s-inspired home.

And while it may look slightly vintage, the technology is up to the minute, right down to being HD-ready. Available in 26", 32" and 37" sizes, you can pick one up for between £679 and £999 now.

Predicta Meteor – retro space age TV set

Predicta_meteor
No, this isn’t the work of a mad 50s scientist, Predicta is a modern company making TVs heavily influenced by mid-century design.

Check out the Predicta website for the full range of weird and wonderful TVs and more details on our favourite model, the Predicta Meteor. Designed by Mike L. Scott, the Meteor has aircraft-inspired legs, a hand-built hardwood cabinet and a 24-inch screen, which pivots on a polished brass collar.

And although these TVs are designed to fit into period houses, they’re still packed with the latest technology – easily connecting up with your cable/satellite supplier and video/DVD player.

Now the bad news – well for some of us. These are only currently available in the US. And even if you’re in the US, pricing is incredibly vague. So if you’re in the US, drop them an email for a quote for your chosen set. And for those of us outside – we’ll keep you posted as soon as they become available here.

eBay Watch: Vintage game consoles galore!

Vintage_consoles

Nostalgia for vintage game consoles has never been greater, so you can expect the final price for these 90 classic gaming consoles to be pretty hefty.

I say classic, but there’s a few ropey items amongst the huge number available. However, there’s a plethora of classic/rare items, including the Magnavox Odyssey, Virtual Boy, Neo Geo Pocket, Intellivision and Atari Lynx. And there’s even games thrown in for good measure, plus some near-new consoles like the Dreamcast PSOne and recent Gameboy variations.

For a full listing of everything (and a superb picture of every console up for grabs), check the auction page. The seller is based in Germany and the starting price is 3,000 Euros (plus shipping). Not cheap, but these things will only go up in value.
