Kitchen Front at the Imperial War Museum

Ministry_of_Food_poster

A while back we featured the Imperial War Museum's The Ministry of Food exhibition, particularly the book which featured wartime recipes with which to feed your family on a budget today. If you're feeling too lazy to try these yourself you may be interested to hear that, for the run of the exhibition, the museum's cafe has transformed itself into Kitchen Front and is serving authentic recipes from the Second World War period.

Kitchen Front is the brain child of Company of Cooks and is named after a popular World War II BBC radio programme. While it's a intriguing project, it certainly won't be to everyone's taste. The idea of rationed portions and using margarine rather than butter not so appealing? Well, they've decorated the area with photographs of famous cooks from the period so you've got something else to look at other than what you're eating.

Retro Rooms: Simon Donald

Simon

Our shout out for some Retro Rooms got an instant response, including this rather tasty image from Simon Donald.

This is the kitchen from Simon's former house, which was originally fitted in Newcastle on Tyne in 1962 by Danitymaid of Tipton. Rather than doing the usual thing of ripping it out and replacing with something faceless from a DIY warehouse, Simon renovated it back in the 1990s, keeping everything as original as possible. The effort, as you can see from the photo, was well worth it.

Many thanks to Simon for sending it in and if you've got a Retro Room (or Rooms) you want featuring on the site, get in touch with us.

Lego Radio Alarm Clock now available in the UK

Lego_radio

We flagged this up when it was doing the trade shows a short while back, but now the Lego Radio Alarm Clock is available to buy in the UK.

Certain to brighten up your morning, it's an oversized Lego brick, complete with 'studs' that double as volume and tuning controls (the former also doubling as a snooze button). Not only that, this Lego gadget also offers up AM/FM radio, a 12/24-hour clock, an alarm function and the option of battery or mains power.

Looks good, does the job, what's not to like? Certainly not the price – it sells for a very reasonable £24.99.

Mattel launches Barbie Mad Men collector’s dolls

Madmen

Not content with taking on the 1980s, Mattel's Barbie range is now taking aim at the 1960s with the Barbie Mad Men collector's dolls.

Yes, we're going back to 1963 with the cult TV show and key characters from the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency – creative director Don Draper, his wife Betty Draper, Sterling Cooper partner Roger Sterling and office manager Joan Holloway. All, of course, come with the fashion and accessories of the day, with the dolls made of 'Silkstone', a porcelain-like material.
