Retro Retreat: Chert 70s house in Ventor, Isle Of Wight

Ventnor

Not all holiday cottages are small farmhouses with log fires – check out the 70s-style Chert house in Ventnor, on the Isle Of Wight.

Built between 1967 and 1970, it was designed as an ultra-modern retirement home, built into a cliff and with views overlooking the sea. Over the years, it never changed and when the two owners died, it was bequeathed to the National Trust – and is now available as a period holiday let.

Both interior and exterior have been maintained to fit in with the original period. A central spiral staircase leads up to the first floor where two identical wings meet in a central hall way. The largely monochrome interior has bright orange bathrooms and many brilliant mosaic features. And of course, all the furniture is very much in a 70s style.

There’s a great little feature on the house on the 20th Century Society website. And if you like what you read, you can book now, with prices from £300 up for a week.

Onitsuka Tiger California 78 trainers

Onitsuka_california78

As well as the Nippon 60 trainers, there’s another period trainer in the Onitsuka Tiger range for spring/summer 2007 – the Onitsuka Tiger California 78.

It’s a jogging shoe, named after the birthplace of jogging – California – and the year of its original arrival (1978). One of the first mesh-type shoes on the market, it also featured another unique feature – a reflector on the heel. The new version sticks close to the original, with the addition of a metal patch on the outsole.

You can buy them for £55.

Robert Indiana LOVE pop art mirror

Love_mirror
It’s that time of the year – when we all rush around looking for interesting Valentine’s gifts (as opposed to some cheap chocolates and a bunch of wilting flowers). And if you look around, you can find some interesting alternatives – like this LOVE pop art mirror, inspired by the classic LOVE print by Robert Indiana.

Indiana’s image was designed for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964 for a Christmas card design, then followed as a print, postage stamp and sculpture. And now you can pick up the mirror.

It’s 58 x 53cm, polished metal and obviously doesn’t include the image shown (unless you know these people).

It retails for £95.

Original Space Hopper returns

Spacehopper_2
We covered Oddballs last year, a modern update to the Space Hopper. But if you look around, you can pick up an original Space Hopper.

Relive your childhood with a classic. The same goofy, badly-drawn face, the same ridged handles and the same bright orange colour.

The modern version comes with a foot pump to fill with air and unlike the 70s, you’re likely to be the only one bouncing down the street on one today. You can pick one up for £9.99.

Fred Perry cycling shirt

Fp_cycling
Despite looking suspiciously like Coventry City’s home kit from the late 1970s, this take on the cycling shirt from Fred Perry is still quite an eye-catching top.

This is an Italian-made 100% cotton cycling shirt, in sky blue with dark blue and white trim. There’s also a zip-up round neck collar with Fred Perry laurel wreath embroided on the chest

Available from Hip in Leeds, priced at £85.
