For sale: Amityville Horror house in Long Island, New York

Amity

If 'creepy' is high on your list of new house requirements, you need to book a viewing for the Amityville Horror house in Long Island, New York.

Back in 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr shot dead six members of his family in the house. Just a month later,George and Kathleen Lutz, along with their children, replaced them as residents. As the tale goes, they faced a supernatural onslaught, everything from sinister images to slime from the walls and a plague of insects, not to mention being awoken at 3:15am nightly (the time of the killings), with Mr Lutz also claiming to have seen his wife levitate and his daughter seeing a demonlike creature. They fled after less than a month and the rest, as they say, is history.

For sale: 1960s-designed Marina House in Brixham, Devon

Heath1

Fancy living in a house that screams the 1960s? Well, if Devon also appeals, check out Marina House in Brixham, Devon.

Designed in the 60s by architect Mervyn Seal, it's one of a group of houses he produced in the area, some of which have listed status. Not this one though, which has been altered and updated over the years, although the design is still true to the original look.

For sale: 1960s-designed modernist house in Bentworth, near Alton, Hampshire

Hamp1

Another midcentury modernist gem on the market, this interesting four-bedroom house in Bentworth, near Alton, Hampshire, the work of architects  Gore, Gibberd and Saunders.

Highlighted by respected architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his Buildings of England series as a good example of 1960s design, it has what's described as a 'dramatic' cantilevered roof and clerestory windows and has been sympathetically maintained by the current owner, who has also updated it for the modern era.

For sale: 1960s-designed modernist house in Rendham, near Saxmundham, Suffolk

Rendham1

Something a little different in the Suffolk countryside – this 1960s-designed modernist house in Rendham, near Saxmundham, Suffolk.

It's one of a group of similar 'temple' houses designed by John Penn, a modernist-influenced architect who worked with Richard Neutra. Indeed, this is the first of the raised, symmetrical houses from nine in total and widely considered the best. It's also still faithful to the original design, still being in the hands of the family that commissioned it back in 1965. Although, according to the seller, that also means 'extensive refurbishment' is required throughout.

For sale: Modernist High & Over house in Amersham, Bucks

High1

Some years back, I first encountered the modernist High & Over house in Amersham, Bucks on the classic Metro-Land documentary and ever since, I've had a secret yearning to own the property. Well, it's now up for sale. Just a shame about the price tag.

It's an amazing house, the work of Amyas Connell and dating back to 1931, it was the first modernist property to be built in Great Britain. Sadly, it was split into two houses in the early 1960s (before it got listed status), but the current owners have re-united the two parts, as well as restoring High & Over to its former glory.

To let: 15th floor apartment in Erno Goldfinger’s Trellick Tower, London

Trellick1

It's a building that divides opinion like no other, so some of you might be tempted to let this 15th floor apartment in Trellick Tower, others will no doubt run a mile.

Designed by Erno Goldfinger in the late 60s for Greater London Council (many of the flats still have council tenants), it's one of the finest examples of Brutalist architecture in the UK. Indeed, it is grade II listed because of that very fact, with those stunning views from the 15th floor (over half way up) a rather nice added bonus.
