Vintage sci-fi sounds will soon be at your fingertips with the launch of the wonderful Stylophone Theremin.
Because what you have here is a mix of two vintage gadgets, which should offer a lot of fun if you are the sort of person who likes to make weird and wonderful sounds in the home or the recording studio.
The original Stylophone is a lot of fun in a basic electronic way and is still available if you want to recreate Bowie’s Space Oddity in your living room. But the Stylophone Theremin goes down a slightly different route.
The Theremin was the ‘go-to’ instrument for making early and eerie science fiction movie and TV soundtracks. If you’ve ever heard a haunting sound in an old ‘50s or ‘60s space movie, there’s a good chance the Theremin was involved.
Like the original, the Stylophone Theremin allows you to make sounds with the extendable antenna by moving your fingers, arms, or whole body. According to the maker, you can quickly zip between musical notes with the slider and choose between ‘snappy triggered notes’ and ‘drawn-out drones’. You can also ‘make your sounds wobble with vibrato’, ‘create glitchy mayhem with interweaving modulation’, or ‘send the Stylophone Theremin echoing into orbit with a built-in delay circuit’. You are only limited by your imagination and endeavour.
Oh yes, this Theremin is also pretty compact and portable, powered by AA batteries. It also has a built-in speaker and headphone connection, and its antenna can be easily collapsed for storage and transportation. You can even pick up a separate stand if you want to use it on a stage.
Pre-orders are now being taken, and if you want one for Christmas (or any other time), it will be available at the end of the month for £99.99.
