Get Carter car park in Gateshead to be demolished next week

Gateshead_get_carter

Yes, the title says it all – Trinity Square car park in Gateshead, made famous by the movie Get Carter, will be demolished from this Monday, 26th July.

It's an icon of brutalist architecture, opened in 1969 and the work of Owen Luder. But like most designs in that style (and of that era), it's a building that divides opinion locally. The local council is obviously not keen and has decided to demolish it in favour of a new, large-scale development.

So we wave goodbye and remember the classic scene in the movie below. Oh yes, pictured above is Jonathan Wilkinson's art print of it – that sells for £20 from here.

Clash London Calling pop art print by Simon Dixon

Calling

Simon Dixon uses classic 20th century images and icons as a base for his pop art creations, as this London Calling pop art print shows.

Of course, based on the classic Clash album cover, it keeps all of that detail, but flushes it with colour to look more like an original painting. The one pictured here is a high quality giclee numbered Pop Edition, sized at 12 x 12 inches and limited to 750 in total.

You can pick it up online for £40.

Welsh Keep Calm and Carry On Print

Welshkeepcalm

Having previously admitted to a definite fatigue with the Keep Calm and Carry On products, I am still charmed by this Welsh Keep Calm and Carry On Print.

Created by South Wales-based designer Ashleigh Stevens, it has been printed in Wales too. With the dominance of Union Jack or London related products, it is good to find something that reminds us that there is more to the UK than England.

The print measures 54cm x 74cm and is sold in a black frame. It costs £110 from Pedlars.

Abaceda: A Jazz Age Alphabet

Jazz alphabet

Abaceda: A Jazz Age Alphabet is a striking piece of modernist design. Now reproduced by Magma in association with Redstone Press, the alphabet was originally designed in 1926. It uses the combination of Karel Teige's typography combined with the ballet poses of dancer Mllca Mayerova to produce something that's very identifiably of that period.

Though it's perhaps not the most useful alphabetic aid (J and Q are shown together), perhaps the athletic poses will inspire instead?

The print costs £25.
