Designheure reissues 1970s Nonne ceiling light by Raoul Raba

Nonne

A minor classic of space age design is back on the market – the Nonne ceiling light by Raoul Raba, also known as the 'Nun'.

Dating back to 1972 and reissued by Designheure, it's a design typical of the era, but at the same time, very individual. Made from a single piece of metal, it offers up a curved, fluid shape that partly exposes the bulb and throws out a very distinctive shot of light.

That metal is lacquered steel and the price of the reissued light is £321 online.

Katakana midcentury-style writing desk by Dare Studio

Desk
It looks like a piece out of the 1950s, but this Katakana midcentury-style writing desk by Dare Studio has one eye on the present.

The Katakana desk has apparently been designed for use with a laptop, so just enough room for your average notebook, with special compartments for a power supply and clever cable management for unsightly wires. Or if you fancy writing a letter, there are tapered drawers which keep your pens always at the front of the drawer.

Made from black walnut, it’s available from Liberty, but not cheap at £3,295.

Light Traffic Only mugs

Light traffic only

The black and white typography of these Light Traffic Only mugs makes for a great graphic look. Peer a bit closer and you'll realise the mugs are covered with the names of villages in North Essex and surrounding area and the design is in fact inspired by old white village signposts which are gradually disappearing from the countryside.

The product is the combined work of illustrator Michelle Thompson and graphic designer Gareth Wild. This unusual design is also available on tea towels.

These mugs cost £7.

Thonet classic Wiener Stuhl Armchair

Thonet

It looks like a midcentury gem – but the Wiener Stuhl Armchair by Thonet is much older than that.

The year is actually 1904, making this chair (quick calculation) 106 years old – and it doesn't look a day over 50. Designed by August Thonet, it's a classic bentwood chair with a beech frame and with a choice of plywood, plywood perforated or cane seat.

Various colours available for this design classic, all selling for around the £454 price point.

Next offers high street copy of Panton chair

Curve chairs

You'd be forgiven for thinking this room set photograph included the Panton chair. In fact, it's an image from Next's new Autumn/Winter collection, featuring their Panton lookalike, the curve chair.

It's got the same curves and plastic appeal as that iconic piece of 60s design. However, while the Panton chair is available from Vitra in a variety of colours, Next's version is only available in white.

The main noticeable difference between the two is the price. While you can get an official Panton chair for about £150, a pair of the curve chairs costs £125.

Roddy & Ginger city windows cushions

Roddy and Ginger window

We've featured the folk-inspired style of Roddy & Ginger before but their new city windows cushions are something slightly different from the designers. They've still got a retro feel, though this time have more of a 1950s look.

This is much more abstract than previous pictorial designs such as their folk dance print. The windows mentioned in the product name have been depicted as slightly wonky blocks of solid or cross-hatched colour. Available in the zesty colours of aqua or green, or a more subdued grey, their simple design means they would easily fit into many rooms.

Each cushion costs £24.
