The New English Anatomica Ceramics

Anatomica_espresso_cup_and_sa
My first instinct on see the Anatomica range was to recoil in horror, but on further investigation it is an interesting collection.

Designed b y Lisa Turner for The New English, the collection consists of breakfast, cake and bread plates, mugs and tea cup and saucer sets. The design is inspired by the 19th century’s newly discovered fascination with the human body and shows a Victorian gentleman with his inner workings exposed. Prices start from £18 for a mug up to £69 for a coffee cup and saucer.

Folklore and Fun Plates

Il_570xN_174709723
Etsy seller Ninainvorm specialises in ceramics and is particularly fond of mid-century designs. Many of her products are vintage ceramics that she has updated with colourful, playful twists as is the case with her Folklore and Fun Plates.

Here she has taken vintage 1960s breakfast plates and added some brightly coloured circles, hearts and bunting to the existing pattern of people in traditional Dutch folk outfits. You can buy an individual plate for around £26 (although postage from the Netherlands will bump this price up considerably) or you can order a set of six plates to be customised for you, priced around £156. Alternatively, if you don’t mind a few imperfections, there are also some “seconds” for sale, where the printing hasn’t come out quite right, priced just under £19.

Long Distance Love Plate

Finally it seems that Urban Outfitters in the UK is expanding its homeware section and whilst it still has someway to go before it is as good as its USA counterpart, little gems like the Long Distance Love Plate make it worth visiting.

The ceramic plate features illustrations of various old-fashioned telephone styles Many look like traditional Bakelite phones, some look like the Princess phone, although sadly none are Scaniphones or Trimphones, my preferred choice of retro telephony.

The plate measures 22cm in diameter, is microwave and dishwasher safe and costs £6 from Urban Outfitters.
