John Lewis Retro DAB radio

Johnlewis_retro

We have featured specialist John Lewis-branded DAB radios in the past (the bedside DAB and the kitchen DAB to be specific), but the John Lewis Retro DAB radio is an all-rounder, complete with a budget price.

Retro by name and retro by design, an understated glossy case with metal grill, reminiscent of radios from a bygone age. But obviously with that very modern DAB digital radio reception, along with 20 presets, FM reception, a built-in clock and the option of battery or mains power.

Cheap enough at £29.95.

Phaidon Design Classics for the Apple iPad

Phaidon

Way back in our formative years of 2006, we feature what's still a must-have series of books – the Phaidon Design Classics. Well, times change, as does technology, so in 2010 you can now pick up Phaidon Design Classics for the iPad.

It really does look stunning, almost (but not quite) tempting us into investing in Apple's much-hyped tablet. For your money, you get the history of (primarily) 20th century design, just about everything worth owning with 1,000 timeless designs in full colour from the giants of our age, all in chronological order and in this version, rendered stunningly in 3D.

If you've got an iPad (or plan on doing so soon), Phaidon is doing the book conversion for $19.99 initially. Or you can still opt for the traditional book set, which is priced at £100.

eBay watch: 1950s Dieter Rams-designed Braun PA 2 projector

Braun_proj

I make no apologies for picking out so much Dieter Rams from eBay – aside from it looking good, the designer's work has become more collectable year-on-year, which makes it a good investment if you can pick it up at the right price. The price of this Dieter Rams-designed Braun PA 2 projector for example.

Designed in 1957, it's an old school slide projector in grey with a touch of red and black, complete with case and original Braun slide cases. You might have seen it in the MoMA or indeed, the recent Dieter Rams exhibition in London – one similar has been on display in both places.

It's working and described as being in 'excellent cosmetic state', which makes the 99 pence price tag a steal. Still some days left though, but definitely one to watch.
