From Station To Station: Travels With Bowie 1973 – 1976

Bowie_book

You can keep your Ziggy Stardust, by far the most interesting part of David Bowie’s career was his transition from glam rocker to soul boy and alien in the mid 70s – the period covered in the book From Station To Station: Travels With Bowie 1973 – 1976 by Geoff MacCormack.

MacCormack was an old school friend and band mate – and a man with unrivalled access to Bowie during that era. The book is packed with Geoff’s previously unseen photos, along with items of memorabilia including tour programmes, tickets and letters from his personal archives. All appear in this large format book (320mm x 240mm), bound by hand in Italy and housed in a presentation case. And all copies feature the title stamped in 22-carat gold on the spine as well as 22-carat gold page edging.

Yes, you just know it isn’t cheap. Just 2,000 worldwide, the ‘collector’s’ edition (numbers 351-2000) are autographed by the author and sell for £295. Want more? Well, 350 of the books are also signed by Bowie, feature a 10in x 8in lithographic print and are bound in full leather with the title plaque blind-embossed on the front cover.

The price of that? A whopping £425.

New retro-styled Beetle coming from Volkswagen?

Beetle The updated Volkswagen Beetle never did much for me – similar shape, but without the character of the original. All that could change though, with news that Volkswagen are developing a new rear-engine VW Beetle-style car complete with retro looks.

Details are a bit sketchy right now, but the new cars are the brainchild of Ferdinand Piech, chairman of the Volkswagen board and grandson of original Beetle creator Ferdinand Porsche. There will be a choice of engines and a couple of different looks – the most interesting of which is being described as a retro hatchback, with echoes of the original Beetle (pictured here).

This new, smaller retro-styled car will be launched in the US first, then head to Europe. The US price is around $12,000 (£6,000) and is set to rival Fiat’s forthcoming 500.

More on this as soon as we get it.

Yoox Vintage Factory 60s dress

Yoox_vintage Fashion retailer Yoox has opened up a part of its site to sell purely vintage items – the Vintage Factory. It’s aim is to sell quirky and original 60s pieces sourced by the company – and as such, stokc will be in limited numbers and constantly changing.

Browsing through the selection right now doesn’t throw up two many bargains – indeed prices are a little on the steep side. But it’s worth a look and there are some things within most of our budgets. The 3/4 length dress pictured here is Italian and from 1960, a sleeveless dress with red, white and blue vertical stripes, along with a blue ‘shirt’ collar with three gold buttons.

Available in a UK size 10 only, it retails for £59.

Artemide Tolomeo Micro desk light

Tolomeo It’s over 20 years since Michele De Lucchi designed the Tolomeo Micro desk light for Artemide. But even today, you’ll struggle to find a desk lamp as small and stylish as this anywhere.

An 80s item, but inspired by pre-war European design, this is a classic adjustable tabletop lamp, which should fit easily onto your desk or bedside. And once there, it has a cantilevered arm and adjustable head to position the light exactly where you want it.

The kind of item that’s unlikely to ever drop out of fashion – and available for £110.

Ikea’s Karlstad retro armchair

Ikea_orange Looking at Ikea’s Karlstad retro armchair in the orange colour choice, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a design straight out of a late 60s home interiors catalogue.

It’s a large swivel armchair, very much in Bond villain territory, made from moulded, high-resilient polyurethane foam to create and maintain the rounded shape. It’s also adjustable via a lever under the seat and covered in a dirt-repellent wool fabric.

Designed by Henrik Preutz and also available in grey, you can pick one up in your local Ikea, priced at £245.

Nexx Vision retro motorbike helmets

Vision_helmets

Our previous favourite motorbike helmets were these Jo Jo Phillips lids. But they could be facing some competition from the new range of Nexx retro motorbike helmets.

The full range is a bit hit and miss, but we do like the Vision Vintage and the Vision Denim (both pictured above). The Vision Vintage, as the name suggests, has styling very much of the past, with chin strap, goggles and a rounded shape. It’s also available in an endless number of colour schemes. The Vision Denim keep a similar shape, but is covered in vintage denim. Ideal if you want to match up with your jeans.

Both are available now, retailing for between £70 and £100.
