Puffin by Design book

Puffin by design

Founded just five years after Penguin, Puffin is celebrating seventy years of publishing. Puffin by Design, written by Phil Baines (who also wrote Penguin by Design) offers a visual history of the publishing house over that period.

Puffin was founded with the aim of producing affordable, well illustrated books for children. This book features 500 of the imprint's most memorable covers and traces the development of their list, from titles designed to explain the then ongoing Second World War to children, to publishing much loved kids classics, such as Stig of the Dump, Mary Poppins and Watership Down in their paperback format. It also looks at their work with illustrators like Shirley Hughes.

A fascinating read, that's sure to remind you of some childhood favourites, the book costs £14 from Amazon

Go Go Retro wallpaper by Harlequin

Go Go Retro wallpaper

Harlequin's Go Go Retro wallpaper not only has a brilliant name but also is a charming design, ideal for a kids room.

The paper features line drawing illustrations of retro vehicles such as a Vespa, Camper Van and a Beetle. Hopefully it should inspire some good alternatives to the traditional children's ambition of being a train driver. The simple design means it shouldn't look too overwhelming in a room as well.

The paper costs £25 a roll.

Lulabird clocks

Lula Whale_clock2

Looking for some bright, quirky and, of course, retro artwork for a kids room? Take a look at the range from Lulabird, a company created by a couple of mothers who found themselves asking the same question.

In answer, they produce plywood wall art and clocks, featuring owls and flowers and whales, all in the same idiosyncratic style as the image shown above. The numbers on the clocks are all deliberately simple to read and so should help with the tricky business of telling the time.

The pieces range in price but, to give you an idea, the whale wall clock pictured is £30.
